Now revised and updated with reflections by Rebekah Rojcewicz, this foundational text outlines the trusted methods used for training those in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program. Exploring the development of the program since its 1959 origins, this edition reflects changes in the materials made by Catechesis of the Good Shepherd founder, Sofia Cavalletti. Rebekah Rojcewicz’s new introduction provides a concise overview of these revisions, while recounting the origins of the program’s desire to nurture the child’s potential for a relationship with God.

“Knowing how well the Good Shepherd and the Child has served these last 20 years, I am overjoyed with this new revision of the book! We have learned many things about the child in relationship with God over these past years, and have modified our approach.”

  • The History of the Kingdom of God, Part 2: Liturgy and the Building of the Kingdom
    $17.00

The History of the Kingdom of God, Part 2: Liturgy and the Building of the Kingdom is Sofia Cavalletti’s revision of her earlier book Living Liturgy. Together with Part 1, “From Creation to Parousia,” these books offer the reader insight into Scripture and Liturgy as the means to understand God’s plan of salvation history, from the creation of the world, through redemption by the life, death, and Resurrection of Jesus, to its culmination in the Parousia, when God will be all in all.

Sofia Cavalletti’s primary concern in this book is to assist adults who are working with the religious formation of children to enter more deeply into the essential aspects of the liturgy. As Rebekah Rojcevicz writes in the introduction, “The second volume, subtitled ‘Liturgy and the Building of the Kingdom of God,’ considers specifically the present phase of history, in which God’s plan is always in action, that is, it is continuing to unfold, and every man, every woman, and every child is invited to participate and collaborate in this history.” Her understanding of liturgy as transformative prayer brings about God’s kingdom on earth as it is in heaven makes this work of interest to all who love the liturgy and for whom liturgy is central to their Christian life.

Parenting is a challenging call. Many resources for parents focus on the child, but Parenting: A Sacred Path is for parents to reflect on their experience, with all of its joys and struggles, as an invitation to grow in faith, love, trust and compassion. Each of six chapters provides an opening reflection for personal or group use, followed by a week of quotes for reflection and prayer. The gift of this simple book is in the self-understanding, acceptance and growth as parents nurtured week by week. It’s perfect as a gift to parents, or as a tool to lead reflection groups.

Here’s a note we received from one grateful reader:

“I wanted you to know that not only did I enjoy spending the six weeks of Lent with you on the sacred path of parenting, but also that that time has brought fresh air and energy and joy to my relationship with my 14-year-old son. Three weeks into [your booklet], my son and I had a breakthrough. I’ll spare you the details—what he wanted, what I didn’t—except to say that in the end we actually listened to each other and negotiated a compromise that helped us both see the other’s point of view. Each of us was pleased we could—and did!—do something other than insist on our own way. So, we are celebrating new fruit that will multiply 100 fold, I’m sure.”

The meditations explore and illuminate the Christian message that we have been led to through our work with children, including the birth and infancy of Jesus, the parable of the Good Shepherd, the roots of the Eucharist and the Easter Mystery, and the parable of the True Vine. They are the fruit of Sofia Cavalletti’s meditions with adults gathered together as listeners of the word. Because the book arose from actual encounters, the writers invite you to enter into it as fellow listener, meditating on scripture and liturgy alongside them.

Way of Holy Joy, a compilation of writings by the co-founder of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, focuses on the spiritual life of the child. With the exception of one, these have not previously been published in English. As the title suggests, these essays shine a light on an often overlooked spiritual reality: the joy that is found in the relationship between God and the Child.

The essays included in this volume, published shortly after her death in August 2011, also reflect her involvement with the wider church community, including her work on the relationship between the Catholic and Jewish faiths. Those interested in children’s spirituality will find these essays a source of inspiration and insight. Perhaps more importantly, all who seek to live out their baptismal calling as Christians will benefit from meditating on these reflections. One of the most important, though perhaps unintended, effects of Cavalletti’s work has been its impact on adults. By focusing on what is most essential, what is at the heart of faith—a relationship with a Person—many have discovered for themselves this “way of holy joy.”

This is the continuation of The Religious Potential of the Child (from 3 to 6 years old). The author, Sofia Cavalletti, the founder of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, describes an approach to the religious education of children according to the methods of Maria Montessori.

The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd for children age 6 to 12 builds on the foundation in scripture and liturgy offered to the 3- to 6-year-old child. The theme of the covenant between God and humankind, first revealed to the people of Israel, is expanded to include all of history, from Creation to the Parousia, the second coming of Christ. For the older child, awareness of participation in this covenant relationship leads spontaneously to a sense of moral responsibility and of engagement with the cosmos in all its manifestations.

This book will be a great help to educators and catechists seeking to understand the characteristics of the older child, particularly the child’s relationship with the mystery of God. Even those not familiar with the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd will find in these pages wisdom and insight into the religious life and needs of older children.

This fascinating book by Lisa Miller, Ph.D. presents the science behind childhood spirituality, and seeks to create a dialog among children, parents, and those who work to support them.

How do we help children understand the challenging stories of violence in Scripture in light of our belief in a God of love? Based on her experience as a Montessori educator and catechist of the Good Shepherd, Catherine Maresca has thought deeply about this question. In Violence and Nonviolence in Scripture: Helping Chldren Understand Challenging Stories, she bridges years of reading the Bible with children with her commitment to nonviolence and peacemaking. Catechists and religious educators will find this a welcome and helpful resource in their own work with children.

“Honoring children’s natural capacity for spiritual insight, Maresca does not seek to explain the violence in the Bible to children– rather, she provides tools for adults to reflect theologically on it with children in age-appropriate ways. Resisting simple answers that are too shallow after early childhood, Maresca’s approach lays a foundation for the dynamic interaction with Scripture that God’s Spirit uses to form deep faith.” -Sarah Ann Bixler, Assistant Professor, Eastern Mennonite Seminary, Harrisonburg, Virginia

  • Drinking from the Sources: How Scripture and Liturgy Shape Our Christian Life
    $15.00

One of the many gifts of Sofia Cavalletti to the church is her clear eyed theological grasp of the sources of our faith. She once said that she was led to this essentiality by the children, and that she herself was a very complicated person. This gift of essentiality is offered in Drinking from the Sources’ careful translation and selection of Sofia Cavalletti’s meditations on Scripture and liturgy. The foundation of our faith (and of CGS), Sofia frequently said, is Scripture and liturgy. This book explores how they are related to each other, how we are formed by them, and the wealth of the Eucharistic Prayers. In times such as these, when our attachment to the church may be shaken, to be rerooted in the sources of our faith is a gift indeed.
