The lessons of Grace and Courtesy in Montessori environments that replace “classroom management” help children to build community together. Simple sentences and related art will quide you through the lessons of Grace and Courtesy and serve as a gentle reminder of the practices that create harmony among children.

Artist and Montessori teacher Alicia Olsen has created an easel book with paintings of 16 lessons for Grace and Courtesy. Each page is a painting with a simple sentence that you can use to demonstrate a lesson to children, or reinforce by setting a particular page on a shelf at the children’s eye-level.

  • Life in the Sheepfold DVD: A Parent’s Introduction to the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd
    $20.00

In this video, Catherine Maresca, director of the Center for Children and Theology, leads an intimate conversation with parents, sharing with them the rich spiritual life of their children, and how that life is nurtured in the atrium.

The video includes the presentation of the parable of the Good Shepherd, discussions of the use of materials in CGS, the work of the 3-6 year old children, the role of parents in Christian formation, and the work of the 6-12 year old children.

This one hour video is the perfect introduction to the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, either for a parent education session or for those who’d love to learn more about the spiritual life of children.

  • Sing with Joy: Music of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd for Children Three to Six Years
    $40.00

A book and CD set of 39 songs with music, chords, lyrics and notes by Catherine Maresca regarding use of each song in the atrium. The CD is recorded by the children’s choir of Christ Church Cathedral in Nashville, TN.

Music has a very important place in the prayer of children and life in the CGS atrium. To encourage the use of good music and lyrics, Treehaus Communications, musicians in Nashville, and catechist/formation leader Catherine Maresca created Sing With Joy and Songs of Love, two books with a CD of age- and theme-appropriate music for the atrium.

The books were created to provide legal access to the lyrics, music notation, notes and recordings of music for catechists, respecting the rights of the composers, writers, artists and publishers who created and brought this music to the public. This or any other music should not be reproduced without permission.

After 30 years, and feedback from the catechists who use these beloved texts, we have updated our scripture booklets to better suit the needs of the children of the atrium.

Scripture Booklets isolate texts particularly appropriate for children and presents them with one verse per page so that attention can be given to each idea in the text. The texts were chosen by Sofia Cavalletti. Simply illustrated with only one drawing in each booklet so the child’s reflection will be encouraged but not limited by the artwork.

The color of the covers follows the coding of Sofia’s own hardbound set.

Buy Scripture Booklets Sets I and II together and save $30. This new edition matches the materials of the Level I and II atriums, plus the parables of Level III. Smaller size, laminated covers, new calligraphy and art work, and a Spanish translation in the back make this affordable new edition more attractive and usable than ever.

Parenting is a challenging call. Many resources for parents focus on the child, but Parenting: A Sacred Path is for parents to reflect on their experience, with all of its joys and struggles, as an invitation to grow in faith, love, trust and compassion. Each of six chapters provides an opening reflection for personal or group use, followed by a week of quotes for reflection and prayer. The gift of this simple book is in the self-understanding, acceptance and growth as parents nurtured week by week. It’s perfect as a gift to parents, or as a tool to lead reflection groups.

Here’s a note we received from one grateful reader:

“I wanted you to know that not only did I enjoy spending the six weeks of Lent with you on the sacred path of parenting, but also that that time has brought fresh air and energy and joy to my relationship with my 14-year-old son. Three weeks into [your booklet], my son and I had a breakthrough. I’ll spare you the details—what he wanted, what I didn’t—except to say that in the end we actually listened to each other and negotiated a compromise that helped us both see the other’s point of view. Each of us was pleased we could—and did!—do something other than insist on our own way. So, we are celebrating new fruit that will multiply 100 fold, I’m sure.”

Way of Holy Joy, a compilation of writings by the co-founder of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, focuses on the spiritual life of the child. With the exception of one, these have not previously been published in English. As the title suggests, these essays shine a light on an often overlooked spiritual reality: the joy that is found in the relationship between God and the Child.

The essays included in this volume, published shortly after her death in August 2011, also reflect her involvement with the wider church community, including her work on the relationship between the Catholic and Jewish faiths. Those interested in children’s spirituality will find these essays a source of inspiration and insight. Perhaps more importantly, all who seek to live out their baptismal calling as Christians will benefit from meditating on these reflections. One of the most important, though perhaps unintended, effects of Cavalletti’s work has been its impact on adults. By focusing on what is most essential, what is at the heart of faith—a relationship with a Person—many have discovered for themselves this “way of holy joy.”
