Baptized: Opening the Gift

$100.00

We are excited to launch our first offering of Grace Space Families. Over the next several years, Grace Space Families will offer gifts of the atrium for families at home, to share God’s love and God’s call to live grace-filled lives.

The purpose of this class is to provide a curriculum clergy can use to deepen parishioners’ understanding of baptism and commitment to Jesus. Though originally developed to prepare parents for the baptism of a child, this class is useful for all ages. It is perfect for adults and teens as they begin preparation for Baptism, Confirmation, or Reception. It can also be used more generally as an adult series for the entire parish. It welcomes new families to the church in a way that increases the likelihood they will become part of the congregation.

The Baptismal Covenant is a great treasure at the heart of our Christian Tradition. It elegantly and simply articulates what it means to be a follower of Jesus. It offers a simple yet profound theology of both good and evil. Yet we seldom explore its meaning in depth with our people. This class gives a set of lesson plans in the form of an illustrated slide show, handouts, and a meditation on baptism that speaks to all ages. It discusses some of the practical aspects of doing baptism education in the parish. The approach I take is interactive and discussion based. It invites growth into a positive and relational understanding of God and Holy Baptism.

The class will consist of four sessions, each running 60 to 70 minutes in length, and will meet on Zoom. Enrollment for each class will be limited to ten. An ecumenical group of participants is welcome.

Facilitator: The Rev. Joyce Scherer-Hoock is an Episcopal priest. In addition to preaching and celebrating the Eucharist, Christian Formation for all ages has been central to her ministry. Joyce discovered the strength of Montessori based Christian Formation with “Young Children and Worship’, the precursor to Godly Play. This led her to be certified in all three Levels of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, and began teaching adults that method. She especially enjoys building bridges between Roman Catholics and Protestants in her courses. Before ordination she taught high potential learning-disabled adolescents at Landmark School. She grew up in Florida, but prefers New England’s four seasons. She and her husband Bob have two adult daughters and live in Massachusetts with their Shetland Sheepdog, a goat and a miniature horse.
